IELTS Band 7 Strategy: A Complete Study Plan
April 3, 2026
How to Reach IELTS Band 7
Band 7 means you are a "good user" of English — you can handle complex language and understand detailed reasoning. It's the most common requirement for university admissions and skilled migration visas.
Here's a realistic study plan based on what actually works.
Understanding the Band 7 Requirements
Each skill has specific criteria:
- Listening: 30–32 correct answers out of 40
- Reading: 30–32 correct answers out of 40 (Academic)
- Writing: Task Achievement + Coherence + Lexical Resource + Grammar all at Band 7
- Speaking: Fluency + Lexical Resource + Grammar + Pronunciation all at Band 7
Week-by-Week Plan (8 Weeks)
Weeks 1–2: Foundation
- Take a practice test to identify your current level
- Focus on your weakest skill — this is where you'll gain the most points
- Learn the test format inside out (timing, question types, marking criteria)
- Build a vocabulary notebook: aim for 10 new academic words per day
Weeks 3–4: Skill Building
- Listening: Practice with BBC 6 Minute English, TED Talks, podcasts at 1.0x speed
- Reading: Read one academic article per day (The Guardian, BBC Future, National Geographic)
- Writing: Write one Task 1 and one Task 2 per week with feedback
- Speaking: Record yourself answering Part 2 cue cards (2 minutes each)
Weeks 5–6: Exam Techniques
- Listening: Focus on Section 3 and 4 (the hardest). Practice note-taking
- Reading: Master True/False/Not Given — the most common mistake area
- Writing: Perfect your Task 2 essay structure (4 paragraphs, 250+ words)
- Speaking: Practice Part 3 discussions — give extended answers with examples
Weeks 7–8: Exam Simulation
- Do 2 full practice tests per week under real conditions
- Review every mistake — understand WHY you got it wrong
- Focus on time management: Reading = 20 mins per passage, Writing Task 2 = 40 mins
- Sleep well the week before the exam
Writing Task 2: The Key to Band 7
Most students lose points on Writing. Here's the structure that works:
- Introduction (40 words): Paraphrase the question + state your position
- Body 1 (90 words): Main argument + example + explanation
- Body 2 (90 words): Second argument or counterargument + example
- Conclusion (30 words): Restate your position in different words
Speaking: Sound Natural
For Band 7 Speaking, you need:
- Fluency: Speak at a natural pace. Pausing to think is fine — saying "um" every sentence is not.
- Vocabulary: Use topic-specific vocabulary. Don't just say "good" — say "beneficial", "rewarding", "invaluable".
- Grammar: Mix simple and complex sentences. Use conditionals, passive voice, and relative clauses.
- Pronunciation: Focus on word stress and sentence intonation, not accent.
Common Mistakes That Keep You at Band 6
- Writing under 250 words for Task 2
- Not paraphrasing the question in your introduction
- Using memorised phrases that don't fit the question
- Spending too long on Task 1 (should be 20 minutes max)
- Not developing your ideas with examples
Track Your Progress
Keep a log of your practice test scores. You should see improvement every 2 weeks. If a skill plateaus, change your study approach — doing the same thing and expecting different results won't work.
